Alambre is the Moscatel de Setúbal label from José Maria da Fonseca, one of Portugal’s historic wine families. The name refers to the Alambre estate and, fittingly, to the wine’s amber colour. This is fortified Moscatel from the Setúbal Peninsula, a category that can be deeply satisfying when handled with freshness as well as sweetness.
At its best, Alambre shows orange peel, marmalade, honey, dried apricot and spice, but the wine works because the sweetness is carried by fragrance and lift rather than sheer weight. Older expressions gain nuttier, more caramelised notes, while the younger bottlings tend to be brighter and more floral.
This is a style that deserves more attention than it gets. With blue cheese, almond pastries or simply served cool after dinner, Alambre offers the kind of old-school Iberian pleasure that feels both distinctive and complete.
