Weingut Carl Loewen is a historic Mosel estate based in Leiwen, along the steep slate slopes of the middle Mosel. The winery’s roots stretch back more than two centuries, and today it is run by the Loewen family, who have built an international reputation for producing Riesling that combines traditional Mosel elegance with remarkable depth and precision. The estate is especially admired for its work with very old, ungrafted vines that survive in some of the region’s most revered vineyard sites.
The vineyards of Weingut Carl Loewen include famous Mosel sites such as Maximin Herrenberg and Ritsch. These steep slopes, composed primarily of Devonian slate, give the wines their distinctive minerality and tension. Riesling from these vineyards often shows bright aromas of green apple, citrus and white peach, layered with subtle herbal notes and the unmistakable slate-driven freshness that defines great Mosel wines. Whether produced in a delicate off-dry style or as a finely balanced dry wine, the focus remains on purity, precision and expression of place.
A defining feature of the estate is its commitment to historic viticulture. Some parcels contain vines planted more than a century ago, many of them still on their original rootstocks. These old vines produce small yields but wines of remarkable concentration and complexity. Through careful vineyard work and restrained winemaking, Weingut Carl Loewen continues to demonstrate how Mosel Riesling can achieve both elegance and longevity while remaining deeply connected to its terroir.
