Niepoort, a storied name in Portugal’s Douro Valley, crafts the Vertente 2004, a red blend showcasing the region’s rugged terroir. Led by Dirk Niepoort, this fifth-generation winery blends tradition with innovation. Sourced from 20- to 50-year-old vines in the Cima Corgo subregion, Vertente combines Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and other local grapes from schist soils. The 2004 vintage, warm and balanced, yielded structured wines. Fermented in stainless steel and aged 18 months in French oak (25% new), it pours deep ruby with aromas of blackberry, plum, and spice, accented by graphite and floral hints. Medium-bodied, it offers silky tannins, fresh acidity (5.5 g/L), and concentrated fruit, with vanilla and mineral notes. The finish is long and elegant. Sustainable practices ensure authenticity. Ideal for grilled meats or stews, it peaks now but holds through 2025. A Douro classic with finesse.
