Château d’Yquem is one of the most legendary wine estates in the world, located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France. For centuries the château has been regarded as the ultimate benchmark for noble sweet wines, renowned for its exceptional quality and extraordinary longevity.
The vineyards of Château d’Yquem are planted on a unique terroir of gravel soils over limestone, providing ideal drainage and perfect conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea, also known as noble rot. The wine is produced primarily from Sémillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc. Harvesting takes place in several selective passes through the vineyard, ensuring that only perfectly botrytized grapes are picked.
Yquem wines are celebrated for their remarkable complexity and balance between intense sweetness and vibrant acidity. Aromas of honey, apricot, candied orange peel and tropical fruit gradually evolve into notes of caramel, toasted nuts and exotic spices as the wine ages. These wines possess extraordinary ageing potential and can develop gracefully for decades.
In the historic Bordeaux Classification of 1855, Château d’Yquem was the only estate awarded the status of Premier Cru Supérieur, highlighting its position as the most prestigious producer of Sauternes wines.
