Kay Brothers is a historic winery from McLaren Vale in South Australia, founded in 1890 by brothers Herbert and Frederick Kay. The estate is one of Australia’s oldest continuously operating wineries and is renowned for its traditional winemaking approach and expressive wines sourced from old vineyards.
The vineyards are located on the hills surrounding McLaren Vale, benefiting from a warm Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling influences from the nearby ocean. Varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in these conditions. The wines often show aromas of ripe blackberries, plum and cherry, accompanied by notes of spice, chocolate and subtle earthy complexity.
Kay Brothers is known for its use of traditional open fermenters and gentle extraction methods that have been employed for generations. This philosophy results in wines with depth, structure and an authentic expression of the McLaren Vale terroir, combining richness with balance and ageing potential.
