Weingut Franz Hirtzberger is one of the most respected estates of Austria’s Wachau region and a benchmark producer for both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The family winery, based in the village of Spitz along the Danube River, has been cultivated for several generations and today is led by Franz Hirtzberger and his son Franz Jr. The estate is widely admired for its precise, terroir-driven wines that capture the distinctive mineral character of the Wachau’s steep terraced vineyards.
The domaine farms some of the region’s most celebrated sites, including Singerriedel, Honivogl and Hochrain. These vineyards lie on steep slopes of weathered primary rock and gneiss, soils that give the wines their remarkable structure and tension. Grüner Veltliner from Hirtzberger often shows ripe orchard fruit, white pepper and subtle herbal notes, while the Rieslings display crystalline purity with aromas of citrus, apricot and pronounced mineral depth. The finest bottlings are released in the Wachau’s highest classification, Smaragd, indicating wines of power, concentration and ageing potential.
Weingut Franz Hirtzberger is known for a meticulous approach both in the vineyard and the cellar. Careful harvesting, gentle pressing and patient fermentation allow the natural character of the grapes and sites to remain clearly visible in the finished wines. The result is a portfolio of wines that combine intensity with elegance and are regarded among the most precise and age-worthy expressions of Wachau terroir.
