Weingut Wittmann is one of the leading estates of Rheinhessen and a benchmark producer for dry German Riesling. The family winery, based in Westhofen, has been cultivated for several generations and today is run by Philipp Wittmann, who has played a major role in the renaissance of quality wine in the region. Wittmann is also a prominent member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), the association that represents Germany’s top estates and vineyard sites.
The vineyards around Westhofen are among the most prestigious in Rheinhessen, including celebrated sites such as Morstein, Kirchspiel and Brunnenhäuschen. These limestone-rich soils give the wines their hallmark structure and mineral tension. Riesling is the dominant grape variety and forms the backbone of the estate’s reputation, particularly in the dry Grosses Gewächs wines, which combine precision, depth and remarkable ageing potential. Aromas typically move between citrus, white peach and subtle herbal tones, underlined by a distinct chalky minerality.
Weingut Wittmann has been farming biodynamically for many years, reflecting a philosophy that prioritises soil health, vineyard expression and minimal intervention in the cellar. The result is a style that balances purity with intensity, producing wines that are both intellectually compelling and highly drinkable. For many enthusiasts and critics alike, Wittmann stands among the finest interpreters of modern dry Riesling from Rheinhessen.
