Alión is the modern Ribera del Duero arm of the Vega Sicilia family, built around 100% Tinto Fino and a distinctly sleeker, more immediate style than the long-aged classics from Valbuena. It draws fruit from a range of sites across Ribera del Duero and ages the wine in a combination of concrete, barrel and oak vats before final blending.
The result is one of Spain’s most reliable modern reds: dark cherry, plum, cocoa, cedar and spice, with a velvet texture that makes it more approachable in youth than many traditional Ribera wines. Even so, the better vintages still carry enough backbone and freshness to develop very well in bottle.
What separates Alión from countless polished reds is the precision of the fruit and the discipline of the élevage. It is generous, yes, but rarely blowsy. For many buyers, it is the sweet spot between the grandeur of Vega Sicilia and the straightforward charm of modern Tempranillo.
