Kongsgaard is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive artisanal producers in Napa Valley. Founded by winemaker John Kongsgaard, the estate has built a reputation for uncompromising craftsmanship and a strong commitment to traditional winemaking methods. Since the 1990s, Kongsgaard has achieved near cult status, particularly for its powerful and intensely expressive Chardonnay.
The vineyards are located on steep hillside sites around Napa as well as carefully selected parcels with rocky, well-drained soils. Chardonnay forms the heart of the production, often sourced from low-yielding vines that produce small, concentrated berries. The wines typically reveal aromas of ripe citrus, peach and tropical fruit layered with notes of toasted hazelnut, honey and mineral complexity. Despite their richness, they maintain remarkable tension and structure.
In the cellar, Kongsgaard follows a highly traditional approach. Grapes are hand harvested, pressed in old wooden basket presses and fermented with native yeasts. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, often with extended lees contact. The result is a style of Napa Valley wine that combines depth, texture and precision, capable of developing extraordinary complexity with age.
