Fine wine from Nahe Germany.
Nahe is a relatively small wine-growing region in Germany, with about 10,400 acres (4200ha). The region borders Rheinhessen to the east, Rheingau to the north-east and Mittelrhein. Until the classification of the German wine law of 1971, all Nahe wine was sold as 'Rhine wine'. Today only Riesling wines can bear the name of the area's top wineries. Müller-Thurgau had been the most common grape variety since varietal records began, but by the 1990s it had fallen to less than a fifth of total plantings.
Riesling is now king among quality producers, with red varieties Dornfelder, Spätburgunder and Portugieser quadrupled in number since 1990. The region continues to evolve as a producer as Hermann Donnhoff Nahe wines on the international stage.
