Saxum Vineyards stands among the most respected producers in Paso Robles, California. Founded by Justin Smith, whose family has farmed land in the rugged hills of west Paso Robles for generations, the estate has become one of the defining Rhône-inspired wineries of the region. The vineyards are located primarily in the Willow Creek District, an area known for its limestone-rich soils and dramatic hillside exposures.
The estate focuses largely on Rhône varieties such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, complemented by smaller plantings of Graciano and Tannat. These grapes thrive in the warm Paso Robles climate while retaining structure from the calcareous soils. The wines are deeply expressive, offering aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum layered with notes of cracked pepper, dried herbs, violet and dark chocolate.
Saxum produces a range of highly sought-after cuvées including James Berry Vineyard, Broken Stones and Booker Vineyard. Winemaking emphasizes low yields, careful vineyard selection and minimal intervention in the cellar. The resulting wines are powerful yet refined, combining concentration with remarkable balance and ageing potential—qualities that have earned Saxum Vineyards a reputation among the most acclaimed producers in modern California wine.
