Anakota is devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County’s Knights Valley, a rugged, underappreciated zone on the flanks of Mount St. Helena. The estate’s vineyards rise on volcanic slopes, and the wines are very much shaped by that mountain setting rather than by the softer profile many drinkers associate with broader Sonoma Cabernet.
The style is dark and structured, with blackcurrant, wild herb, cedar and a rocky, almost ferrous edge. Yet Anakota is not simply about force. The better wines show a lifted, savoury character and enough tension to keep the richness in check. Helena Montana and Helena Dakota, in particular, are meant to speak as distinct sites.
For Cabernet buyers, Anakota is compelling because it sits between Napa glamour and classic mountain austerity. It offers concentration, but also a stern, Sonoma-shaped identity. That combination gives the wines real cellar interest.
