Domaine du Pégau is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and traditional estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône Valley. The domaine is run by the Féraud family and gained international recognition under the leadership of Laurence Féraud, who has guided the estate since the 1980s. The family’s roots in the region, however, extend much further back through generations of winegrowers.
The vineyards of Domaine du Pégau are scattered across several classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs, including well-known lieux-dits such as La Crau and Montpertuis. Old-vine Grenache forms the core of the blends, typically supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre and other traditional Rhône varieties. The wines are known for their powerful aromatic profile, offering notes of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, dried herbs, pepper and leather, often layered with the distinctive garrigue character typical of the Mediterranean landscape.
In the cellar, Domaine du Pégau follows a firmly traditional approach to winemaking. Fermentations frequently include a portion of whole clusters and the wines are aged for extended periods in large old oak foudres. New oak plays little role, allowing the fruit and terroir to speak clearly. The resulting wines are deep, complex and structured Rhône classics, capable of developing remarkable nuance and depth with long ageing.
